Sung Shi Kyung Vol.5 - The Ballads

Autumn is the time for ballads and the season opens promisingly with the long-awaited return of Ballad King Sung Si Kyung. After adding acting and DJing to his resume, Sung finally got to work on his fifth album, The Ballads. This time he personally produced the entire album, supervising not only the composition process, but also the production of main track On The Street’s music video, which was shot in Shibuya, Tokyo with Japanese actress Okura Erika. The music video was directed by Lee Joon Hyung, who previously worked with Brown Eyed Soul and Lee Soo Young. The key as always is Sung’s unmistakable style, mixing ballads with jazz bossa, pop and even dance. Joining him for this fifth album are old friends Yoon Jong Shin, Kim Hyung Seok and Hareem along with Lee Seung Hwan of The Story, Lee Hyun Seung, and more. South Korea’s second humanoid robot, named EveR2-Muse, made its debut as a pop singer at Robot World 2006 at COEX in Seoul.(Oct. 18)

The robot, with the appearance of a typical Korean woman in her 20s, can talk and sing, thanks to an embedded dialogue engine. She sang the new Korean ballad ”I Will Close My Eyes For You’’ during the opening ceremony.

- “Sorry, I Love You” is a story about an extreme love affair of men and a woman.
Though he has been hit with bullets in the head, Cha Mu-hyeok insists on going to Korea to see his birth mother determined to die in his birth country. Contrary to his belief that she abandoned him for poverty, his birth mother turns out to be a top movie star and his brother also a top star. In a plot to revenge himself on his mother, Mu-hyeok volunteers to work for his brother, Choi Yun (Chung Kyeong-ho), as his manager in a bid to run him. In the process, Mu-hyeok falls in deep love with Yun’s program coordinator, Song Eun-chae.

This is #1 k-drama on my list,…I highly recommend it.

part of Me is a good enough Ayu ballad but it doesn’t pack the punch that JEWEL did. But hey, the PV is somewhat entertaining enough. Melodramatic, yeah, but entertaining in its own way. (Ju-on: The Grudge 3 coming out in 2008 starring Ayumi Hamasaki!)

[PV] Hitomi Shimatani - Dragonfly

Dragonfly is a nice change of pace from the Latin-influenced music that Hitomi tends to lean towards. It sounds different and that’s great. It has its shortcomings, though; there’s an annoying synth line that crops up during the song a couple of times and it’s the most annoying part of the song. Other than that, I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that her album will turn out alright.

YUI - CHE.R.RY

Taxidermy included, CHE.R.RY is nothing but a nonsensical, lighthearted PV that puts a smile on your face. And hey, the song is great as usual. It’s a nice change of pace from her previous singles which didn’t exactly sound nice in a happy atmosphere. CHE.R.RY, even with its weird-looking title and giggle-inducing lyrics (only for those whose minds are in the gutter, mind you), doesn’t fail to deliver.

Rating: 9/10
